The 5 Best Bankruptcy Lawyers in Dallas

The 5 Best Bankruptcy Lawyers in Dallas

How We Picked

Value – Bankruptcy lawyers must be transparent and efficient about your case and your funds. These lawyers should be affordable to most lower-class Texans or offer flexible payment options.
Services Offered – The lawyer or his firm should offer a wide variety of services under bankruptcy law. We preferred lawyers offering a wide enough variety that other options aside from declaring bankruptcy can be considered.
Reputation – He must have a good reputation as efficient and professional. We put preference to lawyers known for being patient, financially proficient, and quick to work.
Qualifications – The lawyer should have extensive experience handling cases and a good educational background. We preferred lawyers with previous employment and education relating to finance.
Success – The lawyer must have successfully declared bankruptcy for a large number of clients. We chose lawyers with thousands of successful chapter 7 and 13 bankruptcies under their belt.

    Pros

    • Cheap and flexible payment options
    • Professional and hardworking staff
    • Member of numerous bar associations

    Cons

    • Can be unresponsive to calls and emails during the case

Christopher Lee is the owner of the Lee Bankruptcy Law Firm. He’s been licensed for almost 20 years and has handled more than 10,000 cases.

He provides many services but specializes in chapter 7 and 13 bankruptcies. If bankruptcy isn’t your preferred option, he’s also helped hundreds of clients settle with negotiations, offers-in-compromise, and tax installment agreements.

Christopher has excellent credentials. He is a member of numerous bar and lawyer associations and is licensed to practice in the United States Supreme Court.

His services are one of the cheapest in Dallas, making himself available to anyone. He offers flexible payment methods and cheap rates.

Some clients have told us that they had their ~$335 chapter 7 filing fees waived, although this was only for those the attorneys deemed eligible. If you’re interested in knowing your eligibility, Christopher offers free two-hour consultations.

His services are perfect for those absolutely down on their luck, such as low-income earners and students. He’s also had his fair share of experience in litigation and personal injury, so you know he can handle any situation.

Clients have also commented on the staff’s professionalism and work ethic, saying that they were very helpful throughout their cases.

There is a downside though since we’ve also been informed that his office can be unresponsive to calls and emails even during an ongoing case.

    Pros

    • Services Hispanic and French clients
    • Very patient and responsive

    Cons

    • Can be rude and unprofessional
    • Expensive

Donald Hood heads his own bankruptcy firm and is the most experienced on our list. He boasts nearly 40 years of experience and specializes in chapter 7 bankruptcies.

Throughout his education, he was a constant top-notcher and it shows. He was a corporate lawyer for nearly 20 years before setting up his own bankruptcy law office.

He did not have a privileged childhood, so he knows how his clients feel. So far, he’s settled tens of thousands of cases with his office.

Hispanics and French clients will be glad to know that he is fluent in their languages, meaning less miscommunication.

Donald makes it a point to be as empathetic as he can be. Hundreds of clients have told us that he is very patient and responsive to their concerns.

He does his best to make sure his clients know what they’re getting into. He explains the benefits, consequences, and process of different chapters of bankruptcy in the simplest terms.

His colleagues have nothing but praise for him. They’ve all taken note of his work ethic and dedication to his clients despite calls in the middle of the night.

There are, however, a few clients that have had negative experiences.

They told us that during their cases, he was rude and unprofessional. This was most common among female clients.

His services are also the most expensive on our list, although he does offer flexible payment options.

    Pros

    • Services Hispanic clients
    • Cheap and flexible payment options
    • Compassionate to his clients
    • Has prosecuted and defended thousands of lawsuits
    • Friendly and professional staff

    Cons

    • Can be slow to take up cases

Tom Thomas heads his own law firm and has 19 years of experience. He is a lawyer best known for his outstanding morals, dedication to his clients, and preference for defending the little man.

His career reflects his values. Before becoming a bankruptcy lawyer, he was a police officer with hundreds of arrests of aggravated felons under his belt.

At the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war, he joined the Ukraine Foreign Legion for a few days before being sent home after sustaining an injury.

Tom is not just a moral man, he’s also a very capable lawyer. He was a financial consultant for a Big 5 accounting firm for a few years before pursuing law.

He makes his services available to as many demographics as possible. His firm employs many minorities, he speaks Spanish, and maintains affordable flat rates with the option of monthly installments.

He specializes in debt defense lawsuits. Clients told us that it seemed like the more financially unstable they were, the harder he fought for them.

His firm gives free consultations for those considering his services. Discounts are also given to repeat clients and clients with multiple cases.

Sadly, there were many clients who told us that he can be unavailable too often. His office can be slow to take up cases, often asking for as much information as they can before agreeing to take up the case.

    Pros

    • Very cheap
    • Services Hispanic clients
    • Friendly and professional staff
    • Handled thousands of cases

    Cons

    • Paralegals sometimes do most of the work
    • Michael can be a bit passive

Michael “Mike” Weston heads Weston Legal, PLLC with his father Pete Weston. The family duo has a combined 40+ years of legal experience, with Michael having 17 on his own.

Mike is a fierce advocate for consumers and his clients. Throughout his career, he’s had thousands of satisfied clients and handled over 15,000 in total.

The firm is based in Houston, but it serves Dallas residents as well.

His services are the cheapest on our list, with monthly installment plans going as low as $50 per month. Clients who want to save money during their bankruptcy should consider him among their options.

He was consistently at the top of his class in his school years and is now licensed to practice in four states. His performance has led him to receive numerous client choice awards from multiple publications.

Mike specializes in handling debt relief for creditors. His cases often revolve around fighting debt and lending agreements, debt collection, and collection lawsuits.

He and his staff can speak Spanish for their Hispanic clients. His firm also gives free consultations for potential clients assessing their options.

We were told, however, that he can be a bit hands-off in some cases. Clients noticed that paralegals did the majority of the work throughout their cases.

We’ve also been informed that he tends to only show up when he’s needed. This usually led to a lack of communication and him sometimes offering terms the clients found unfavorable to them during negotiations.

    Pros

    • Successful professional experience
    • Patient and committed to his clients
    • Affordable

    Cons

    • Can be unresponsive to calls and emails
    • Staff can be rude and unprofessional

Derek Prosser is a partner at the Toronjo & Prosser Law firm. He offers a free 30-minute consultation for potential clients.

He has 15 years of legal experience and was licensed to practice in Texas in 2013. He is by far the least experienced bankruptcy lawyer on our list, yet he’s had thousands of satisfied clients.

Clients have told us numerous positive things about Derek. One common observation was that he was very detail-oriented and committed to their cases.

This is probably his formal education coming into play. He graduated college with a double degree in accounting and banking & financial economics, giving him the best possible training in bankruptcy lawyering.

His practice specializes in chapter 7 bankruptcy for businesses and chapter 13 for individuals, although he still informs his clients about other possible options.

Aside from his attention to detail and commitment, clients have also informed us of his patience. It doesn’t matter how many questions you have, he will always answer them whenever he’s available.

That being said, we were told by some clients that he has an availability problem. He can be hard to reach through calls and emails sometimes, and can even go for weeks without calling back.

His staff has also been said to be rude and unprofessional. While Derek himself is patient and open to questions, some of his staff were found to be visibly annoyed whenever clients would ask anything.
